My work as a scenic designer is heavily influenced by my work in printmaking, illustration and scenic carpentry. Often I approach a design with a specific image in mind after reading the script; I start with simple pen and ink sketches that lack detail. I seek to explore the boundaries of physical setting and the conceptual space the actors are building, which often means my sketches are not necessarily of a theatrical space but rather the vibes that the script evokes. Out of these initial sketches and conversations with the director I then form more detailed sketches focused on the theatrical space. Illustrations often use specific techniques to guide the viewer's eye to the subject they want you to pay attention to, in my designs I try to use specific objects and set pieces to guide the viewer to the actors in a similar manner. Scenic design is just one of my many forms of creative expression and it is my hope that in seeing my designs people get inspired to create themselves as being creative is one of the first things those in power try to take from us.
